Piano Chiuso Primitivo di Manduria Riserva by Masca del Tacco.
Manduria Primitivo wine
Primitivo di Manduria is a common red wine from southern Italy’s Puglia district.
There is a sweet variant of the wine, Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale, in addition to the regular dry wines.
The grape variety from which these wines are produced, Primitivo, is very traditional in this part of Italy; Manduria is Primitivo’s spiritual home (although the variety came there from Croatia).
It is Italy’s only wine-growing region dedicated to this variety.
In its Zinfandel type, California is also a major producer of the grape.
Primitivo gets its name from the fact that it ripens early, name has no association with being grapes “primitive” neither wine.
It has a similar quality to the Spanish Tempranillo, which means “early” in Spanish.
The variety’s naturally dark-skinned grapes yield inky, tannic wines with vivid flavour and colour.
Primitivo wines have a bitterness to them, as well as clear tannins.
This means they’ll need to age in a bottle or barrel for a few years until they’re ready to drink.
